Indonesia is trying to find a missing submarine that had 53 people on board.
The country’s military chief, Hadi Tjahjanto, told Reuters on Wednesday that the navy was searching for the submarine, and wants help from Australia and Singapore.
And he told Reuters in a text message: “We are still searching in the waters of Bali, 60 miles (96 km) from Bali, (for) 53 people.”
A Navy spokesman told Reuters that the submarine went missing during a torpedo drill north of the island of Bali. They said the submarine failed to relay results as expected.
Tjahjanto told Reuters that contact with the submarine was lost at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Reuters reported that it was a German-made KRI Nanggala-402 submarine, and that the military’s website said it was built in 1978.
Australia and Singapore’s defense departments did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
