After teasing fans on Twitter Thursday evening, Sony Pictures Animation confirmed Friday that the buzzy hero flick will get a sequel set to be released on April 8, 2022. The announcement was bolstered by a subsequent tweet showing “2022” flashing in a GIF foreground.
The Wrap also reported that the release date for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Vivo” was bumped from November 2020 to April 2021.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the sequel’s title will be.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which won the Academy Award for animated feature at this year’s Oscars, was called the best “Spider-Man” movie yet by The Post’s film critic.
That movie stars Shameik Moore as Brooklyn kid Miles Morales, who takes more interest in designing graffiti than his new school. While tagging a subway tunnel, Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider, bringing him face-to-face with Spider-Man Peter Parker (Chris Pine). But that night, Parker is killed by the villain Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) and Miles’ journey to become a Spidey-sensing, web-slinging super hero begins.
The film additionally features visiting heroes from different universes, such as a film-noir version of the super hero (Nicolas Cage), an anime Spider-Girl (Kimiko Glenn) and a Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld).
The synopsis for the forthcoming movie was not available.
