A false rumour is circulating on Twitter that alleges Carrie Johnson is pregnant with twins – but where does this fake news originate from?
The rumour mill began amid news prime minister Boris Johnson and chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak had been fined for attending Johnson’s birthday gathering during lockdown in June 2020, the BBC reports.
Johnson’s wife Carrie and other government officials have also been fined by the Metropolitan Police but now Carrie is at the centre of more internet speculation. Here’s how the false rumours appear to have started.

Carrie Johnson is not pregnant: How the rumour spread on Twitter
First things first, Carrie Johnson is not pregnant with twins in 2022. Neither Mrs Johnson nor anyone connected with Downing Street have announced a pregnancy at the time of writing.
On Tuesday (April 12th), social media users flooded Twitter with posts and speculation Carrie Johnson was pregnant with twins.
The rumour seems to have started following a tweet from a parody Twitter account of journalist and BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg.
The Twitter post claimed: “Breaking: Carrie Johnson has announced she is pregnant with twins”. The tweet has received more than 13k likes and 1,000 retweets already.
On person commented under the post: “Sorry, that’s not big enough news to divert us from the main story of the day (lockdown fines), but nice try!”
Someone else tweeted: “Fake news about Carrie Johnson expecting twins? If the truth, then how to express my response to such callous manipulation?”
Someone else had a more light-hearted response to the rumour: “I’m enjoying reading the good humoured tweets.”
Police issue lockdown fines to government officials
The speculation swirled on Twitter after reports the Metropolitan Police issued penalty notices to several government officials, including Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak.
Mrs Johnson also paid a £50 fine for attending her husband’s birthday gathering in No 10’s Cabinet Room on June 19th 2020 – a time when indoor gatherings were not allowed.
Carrie and the prime minister welcomed their son Wilfred on April 29th 2020. He was born after Johnson was discharged from hospital where he was being treated after contracting covid-19.
The pair welcomed daughter Romy Iris Charlotte on December 8th 2021.

Carrie Johnson apologises for gathering
Carrie Johnson has apologised “unreservedly” for attending her husband’s birthday gathering in June 2020 during lockdown.
As per the Mirrora No 10 spokesperson said: “Mrs Johnson has paid a fixed penalty notice relating to a gathering on the afternoon of 19 June 2020.
“While she believed she was acting in accordance with the rules at the time, Mrs Johnson accepts the Metropolitan Police’s findings and apologises unreservedly.”
