Palestinian Presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh has slammed Israel for “deliberately ignoring international calls for a ceasefire” as the humanitarian situation worsens in Gaza and the death toll climbs.
On Sunday, he said that Israel’s refusal to stop its military offensive in Gaza is part of its wider strategy, which aims to continue the genocide and forcibly starve and displace the Palestinian population.
In his sharp remarks, he added that Israel has continued to violate international laws and UN resolutions, despite mounting international criticism.
The comments come as Israel pushes illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, amid a surge in settler violence against Palestinians.
Abu Rudeineh’s comments also cited the recent Israeli attacks in the West Bank village of al-Mughayyir, where Israeli forces destroyed Palestinian properties. Israeli attacks in recent days have targeted Palestinians in Jenin, Tulkarem, and other cities.
On Saturday, Israeli forces continued to besiege the village of al-Mughayyir, with campaigns of raids, arrest,s and vandalism also rampant.
Al-Mughayyir village council deputy head Marzouq Abu Naim told The New Arab’s Arabic-language sister site, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, that Israeli forces have continued to completely seal all entrances to the village, while also establishing military checkpoints and forcing key businesses, including bakeries and pharmacies, to close.
Ambulances were also blocked from leaving or entering the village, with pregnant women forced to walk to the checkpoints and go to neighbouring villages for treatment.
Abu Rudeineh went on to urge the US administration to take responsibility and ensure Israel stops its aggression and said that American silence could worsen tensions and conflict in the region.
“This silence is unjustified, irresponsible,” he said.
The spokesman demanded that the international community take immediate action in response to the continued bombardment and blockade in Gaza.
He added that the international condemnations and statements from the UN and global leaders must now turn into concrete pressure, saying, “it’s time to act to stop this war before it’s too late”.
