Welcome to boxing in 2021. Instead of preparing for one of the biggest heavyweight fights in history against Anthony Joshua, world champ Tyson Fury is engaging in social media squabbles with Jake Paul.
After his megafight with Joshua fell apart because of a last-minute contract bungle that will see Fury forced to fight Deontay Wilder for a third time, the Gypsy King was on Instagram trying to get his little brother, Tommy, a bout with Paul.
In a video posted to Tyson’s page, the Fury family called out Paul — the controversial star who has leveraged his social media fame into a fighting career — in an attempt to secure Tommy a big payday.
It even included an appearance by NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who dined with the Furys in Florida earlier this week.
But it wasn’t the slickest production and Paul tore apart all involved in a series of videos on his own page on Friday.
“I don’t know if you guys just watched that video but the desperation is seeping through the pores of the Fury family,” Paul said.
“It’s quite embarrassing. The heavyweight champion of the world is on Instagram talking about Jake Paul, begging me to fight his brother.
“Listen Tommy, focus on your fight that’s in a couple of weeks that nobody even knows about by the way. This right here, this clip will be the biggest promotion for your whole entire fight.
“Find an opponent — you’re literally picking someone to fight you in three weeks who hasn’t even been training. You don’t even have an opponent who is going to go through a real camp.
“Fight someone real. Do a real pay-per-view and then maybe we can chat. The last guy you fought was 0-and-9. The people you’ve fought total have a combined record of 15 wins and 250 losses.
“You come looking for me in Miami to try and find me in a gym. You know damn well I’m not in Miami, I’m in Puerto Rico. If you want to pull up here I will gladly beat the f*** out of you.
“Until then just leaves Shaq out of this. I already knocked out an NBA player so leave Shaq out of this is.
“You guys are desperate. Tommy, you fight for $100,000. You have some ladders to climb to get on to my level unfortunately my friend.
“I’m not talking about this anymore. Peace out, f*** you guys.”
But Paul fired one final shot, posting a screenshot of what he claims was Tommy Fury’s girlfriend sliding into his DMs back in 2018.
“One last thing, Tommy,” he said. “You should be more worried about your girl sliding into a bunch of dudes’ DMs then you should be about fighting me.”
Tommy Fury, 22, rose to fame on the UK dating reality show Love Island and has a 5-0 record as a boxer.
He is scheduled to fight on June 5 in England. Tyson Fury is now tipped to fight Wilder in late July in Las Vegas after a judge sided with the American in a contract dispute.
“There’s no chance he (Wilder) will step aside,” Fury’s promoter Bob Arum said.
“Whatever it is, the judge said he had a right to the rematch and we are going to go ahead with it. It will definitely be in Las Vegas.
“It is what it is. He will take out his frustration and anger on Wilder and he tells me he will knock Wilder out quicker than he did last time.”
Joshua is now expected to face Oleksandr Usyk.
