Jim Tressel’s coaching legacy
Tressel is best known for leading Ohio State University to a national championship in 2002. His coaching career began at Youngstown State in 1986, where he served for 15 seasons, achieving a record of 135-57-2 and winning four NCAA Division I-AA national championships. In 2001, he was hired by Ohio State to replace John Cooper.
During his 10-year tenure with the Buckeyes, Tressel’s teams compiled a 106-23 record, secured at least a share of five consecutive Big Ten conference titles, and made three national championship game appearances. His leadership brought Ohio State football back to national prominence.
After leaving coaching, Tressel shifted his focus to education. As president of Youngstown State University, he worked on student success initiatives, workforce training programs, and regional development efforts. His leadership in education and workforce training made him a strong candidate for the lieutenant governor position.
