JK Rowling has told of the “heartbreaking” letters written to her by women who “regret” their gender reassignment ops.
The Harry Potter author also said a “climate of fear” surrounds the trans debate.
Many contacting her are afraid for their jobs and safety if they speak on the issue, she said.
She urged a “more nuanced conversation” over the “huge number” of girls and young women seeking transition.
Rowling, 55, sparked controversy in June by questioning the use of the phrase “people who menstruate” rather than the word “women”.
Rowling said: “Many women are concerned about the challenges to their fundamental rights posed by certain aspects of gender identity ideology.
“I’ve had a huge postbag since speaking up on this issue and more than 90 per cent of the letters and emails have been supportive.”
Her stance led to a massive backlash with criticism coming from fans and Harry Potter stars.
Her comments follow a ruling last week in the High Court that children under the age of 16 are unlikely to be able to give informed consent to undergo treatment with puberty-blocking drugs.
