A group of Jordanian MPs have introduced a draft law to block the resettlement of Palestinians in Jordan, rejecting controversial proposals by US President Donald Trump to control Gaza and displace millions of its inhabitants.
The proposed legislation, spearheaded by Khamis Atiyeh, head of the Islamic parliamentary bloc, seeks to bolster Jordan’s stance against the planned displacement of Palestinians from Gaza that could effectively criminalise collaboration on the project.
Atiyeh announced the proposal on Wednesday, with 50 MPs from various political and independent factions already backing the initiative against the ethnic planning plan.
According to law experts, the number of supporters is expected to grow, as the submission occurred on a day when parliament was not in session. The Jordanian House of Representatives comprises 138 members.
A new legislative push
The draft law explicitly rejects any notion of Jordan becoming an alternative homeland for Palestinians and states that Jordan is for Jordanians, while Palestine is the rightful homeland of Palestinians.
The proposal emphasises that Palestinians alone should determine their future, opposing attempts to dissolve the Palestinian cause and reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to international agreements prohibiting their forced displacement.
The draft law is anchored in international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which classify forced displacement as a crime against humanity and a war crime.
It also draws on United Nations resolutions supporting refugee rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which bans the forced removal of people from their homelands.
Atiyeh described the draft law as a political declaration of solidarity with Palestinians. “Our message is clear: Jordan stands with Palestinians on their land, resisting occupation until it ends,” he told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
“We demand the return of Palestinian refugees to their towns and cities. It is the occupiers, not the Palestinians, who should leave Palestine,” he added.
Atiyeh reaffirmed Jordan’s unified position under King Abdullah, condemning Trump’s resettlement proposals as war crimes under international law.
“The world has overwhelmingly rejected Trump’s proposals, and we are confident that the people of Gaza will remain steadfast on their land, defeating these conspiracies,” Atiyeh said.
The draft law will undergo a parliamentary review process, starting with its referral to the Legal Committee. If approved, it will advance to the government for further consideration and potential enactment.
Nationwide solidarity with Palestinians
Jordanian citizens have demonstrated strong solidarity with Palestinians through protests and commentary.
Thousands marched in Amman and other cities after Friday prayers, chanting slogans praising Palestinian resilience and rejecting Israeli aggression.
Demonstrations extended to various governorates, including Irbid, Balqa, Ma’an, Jerash, and Aqaba. People also rallied across other nations including in the city of Baghdad against the ethnic cleansing proposal.Â
Jordan’s government has also ramped up its efforts to support Palestinians. Since the escalation of Israeli aggression on Gaza, Jordan has delivered medical, food, and relief aid.
