Jose Reyes wrote “I’m happy now” on Twitter just 20 minutes after the team announced that Callaway would be dismissed after his second season, despite his contract running through 2020.
An unfortunate coincidence? Perhaps, but Reyes’ final season in New York was Callaway’s first and it did not go particularly well for either. The Mets sputtered to a 77-85 mark with Reyes hitting a career-low .189 in 228 at-bats.
Reyes had two stints with the Mets throughout his 15-year career in the MLB, combining for 12 seasons from 2003-11 and 2016-18.
