These latest developments could develop into a major transfer headache for Klopp and transfer chief Michael Edwards ahead of next year.
Although Adeyemi’s snub may appear to be the bigger blow, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s miserable afternoon in a move advanced role will come as a disappointment for Klopp – who hinted that he’d earmarked Oxlade-Chamberlain for an attacking role as far back as pre-season.
But his inadequate showing against Villa is likely to force Klopp into a rethink. And Adeyemi’s adamant stance on his Salzburg future looks set to prompt Klopp into another rethink, too.
Adeyemi has emerged as the Reds primary target to come in as a number nine.
But that now looks dead in the water – as well as their in-house backup plan in Oxlade-Chamberlain.
And that double blow could hardly have come at a worse time for the Reds.
As it stands, Liverpool are likely to be in the market for attacking reinforcements next summer – but they will be far from the only ones hunting for an elite striker.
