UFC President Dana White recently took to Twitter to announce the booking of Jorge Masvidal vs Kamaru Usman at UFC 261.
The bout will be a rematch between the duo. Also, the event will have fans in the stands for the first time for a UFC card in over a year in the United States. The pay-per-view will take place in Jacksonville, Florida, and 15,000 fans are expected to be in attendance.
This fight offers Jorge Masvidal a shot at redemption and another crack at the welterweight gold. ‘Gamebred’ hasn’t competed since his UFC 251 loss to Usman. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ defeated Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 to make his third successful defense.
Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz reacted to the news on social media. The Dominance MMA manager lauded the greatness of the champion, Usman, and credited Dana White for booking the fight.
“February 15th I had the privilege of watching the king and king maker @USMAN84kg and @danawhite sit and talk. Kamaru wasn’t satisfied with the way he whipped that guy and wanted to rectify it. He asked and Dana granted this is who made this happen,” wrote Abdelaziz on Twitter.
“Everyone else was just an extra in the movie. And now April 24th the champ will be back just after 2 months,” He further added. Usman is making a quick turnaround since his fight with Burns. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ will look to defend his title for the fourth in his rematch against Masvidal.
Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal 2: What’s changed?
Masvidal stepped up on 6 days’ notice at UFC 251 to save the main event of the first pay-per-view in UFC Fight Island. ‘Gamebred‘ had to travel across the world, cut weight, and fight a savage like Usman, all in under a week. Still, he managed to go the distance with his opponent.
So, one might argue he deserved another shot for his heroics. With a full camp, he will be better prepared and his conditioning can be expected to be much better.
However, Usman will be better prepared too, as his sole focus will be to prepare for Masvidal this term. He was preparing to fight Gilbert Burns ahead of UFC 251. So, both fighters will have their advantages. It remains to be seen who uses it better.
