Kristi Noem, speaking in a Chicago suburb Friday, said city officials have only approved 8% percent of the detainers immigration enforcement has lodged in the region since the beginning of the year. A detainer is generally a request by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to another law enforcement agency to alert them before a suspected immigrant is released from a jail or hold them so ICE can get there to pick them up. “Every public official should talk about and work to protect people, to keep them safe and the American people’s lives safe,” Noem said.
