The Last of Us Part 2 is shaping up to be a truly spectacular game when it launches on PS4 next month.
Ahead of the June 19 release date on PlayStation 4, developer Naughty Dog has revealed new details about the upcoming sequel.
And judging by the latest comments, The Last of Us Part 2 could end up as the biggest PS4 game yet, and in more ways than one.
According to co-director Anthony Newman, The Last of Us Part 2 is so big that players are likely to miss entire story sequences.
“In this game, we’ve gone so far in making the level design open that there are actually entire story moments, entire combat encounters, full scripted sequences that you may completely miss,” Newman revealed.
“And there are things that we feel like, even though a portion of our player base may never see these things, the fact that when you do encounter them, you feel like you discovered them, it lends them this charm and this magic I think is unique to games that this happened to me, because of what I did and the place I explored to.”
Considering the original was fairly linear, Newman’s surprising comments makes the wait for The Last of Us 2 even more unbearable.
Fortunately, there’s not too long to wait, because The Last of Us 2 is mere weeks away from launch.
The Naughty Dog sequel takes place five years after the original game, as the survivors settle in Wyoming.
“After a deadly journey across post-pandemic USA, Ellie and Joel settle down in Wyoming,” reads the official description.
“Living in a thriving community gives them stability, despite the threat of the Infected and desperate survivors.
“When a violent event disrupts the peace, Ellie begins a relentless journey for justice. Hunting those responsible, she’s confronted by devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions.”
The game is said to feature “dynamic stealth” gameplay, not to mention “tense melee combat” and a “fluid movement” system.
The story will reportedly challenge notions of right and wrong, as Ellie explores everything from peaceful mountains to overgrown ruins.
Fans who pre-order the game will receive a PSN avatar of Ellie’s tattoo, and ammo upgrade for Ellie’s pistol, a crafting manual for recipes and upgrades, as well as various supplements required to unlock recipes, skills and upgrades.
There’s also a digital deluxe version of the game, complete with a soundtrack, art book, dynamic theme and six avatars.
