On a blustery Sydney day, the players were off early enough in the morning for the Tom Doak design to yield plenty of birdies. Jake Riley and Rachel Lee recording very respectable three-under par rounds, with Grace Lee coming in with five-under.
But it was Australian Golf Club member Guan, a player with plenty of interested observers in his future after dominating the amateur game at times in this country, who claimed the honours of the lowest score. Guan tying Junior 6s Tour founder Ewan Porter’s course record on the new design that opened for play in 2018.
Guan’s six-under round suggested an uphill battle for Lee in the match play final, the two having already gone toe-to-toe at Lynwood six weeks prior in the circuit’s most recent event.
A bogey at the first for Lee to lose the hole did nothing to dispel those thoughts, before the now No.2 on the girls points list came back in dramatic fashion.
Lee birdied three of the remaining five holes to take the prize with a 1-up win that Guan admirably fought to deny, including a lip-out putt to level things up late in the match.
With one event remaining, Lee now can potentially earn the Tour exemptions on offer to the girls division, while Guan has an unassailable lead at the top of the boys.
