Earlier in the postseason, the Dodgers announced that Vesia would be absent from their World Series roster due to a “deeply personal family matter.” With this announcement, the full extent of the situation was not made public at the time.
During the Fall Classic, the Dodgers’ bullpen paid tribute to Vesia by writing his jersey number, 51, on their caps beginning Game 3; the Blue Jays’ bullpen joined the gesture in later games.The Dodgers were fully aware of Vesia’s situation and chose to keep the details private. Reflecting this sensitivity, Game 3 hero Will Klein said on October 28: ‘I want to let them share their story when they’re ready, but we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. There are bigger things than baseball, and he is in all of our hearts. Since joining the Dodgers in a trade from the Miami Marlins in 2021, Vesia has been a well-liked and trusted member of the team. He was expected to play a key role for Los Angeles in the Fall Classic, until an unimaginable personal tragedy sidelined him.
