A man has mocked a luxury designer for a £2,500 transparent gilet and recreated one using a £5 accessory.
Fashion house Louis Vuitton recently released an outerwear garment – an inflatable gilet with the brand’s classic monogram print.
The website stated the zip-up gilet “offers a futuristic take on the Monogram”.
It added: “The classic pattern features as an embossed frosted motif on a technical gilet, which can be inflated as desired.
“Featuring three valves for inflation, it is styled with a V-neckline and a central zip at the front.”
Mr Ye, 21, from Zhangzhou, southeastern China’s Fujian province, made a replica version using air packaging pillows.
He said: “When you can’t afford to buy a 26,000 yuan (£2,951) gilet, I will make one myself.”
In a clip he shared on Douyin, a Chinese equivalent of TikTok, he uses a packet of air pockets, which usually comes with online shopping orders inside packaging boxes.
Mr Ye rearranges the pockets to a gilet size and simply secures them in position with a tape.
His creation, however, does not come with a zipper.
Viewers were amazed by “money-saving” tip while others teased at the “horrible” design.
One joked: “Cost: 0.50 yuan Profit: 25,995.50.”
Another wrote: “It looks more like a life jacket. Is this for swimming?”
A third said: “This is brilliant. I like yours better, upcycling material.”
Louis Vuitton has been criticised for selling “impractical” clothing as people wondered if the gilet could keep warm.
“You can inflate it at any time?” a man asked. “What for?”
This comes after another luxury brand selling a telephone cord-like necklace for £1,700.
Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta launched a curly accessory that is made of enamelled silver.
