Officials in Orange County have confirmed that basketball star Adreian Payne died early Monday morning in Orlando. Deputies were called to the 2500 block of Egret Shores Drive around 1:30 a.m.A man later identified as 31-year-old Payne was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Lawrence Dority.Officials say Dority stayed at the scene and was transported to OCSO headquarters where he was interviewed by homicide detectives. Dority has been arrested for first-degree murder and lodged in the Orange County Jail.Investigators focused on a black car stopped in the street with its passenger door open.They also roped off a section of the town home community.”I heard gunshots last night. I saw hella police cars. I don’t even know. It was mayhem last night,” Ree Mursaline, a neighbor, said. “It woke everyone in the house, my family up.Sports Illustrated reports the victim, Adreian Payne, rose to prominence at Michigan State where he was named to the All-Big Ten Team. Payne played in 107 NBA games, averaging four points and three rebounds, over four seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic.The Orlando Magic tweeted: “The @OrlandoMagic are saddened to learn of the tragic death of Adreian Payne. Adreian was a two-way player that appeared in five games with Orlando during the 2017-18 season, and also spent time with the Lakeland Magic of the NBA G League.
