The Spanish goalkeeper was pictured arriving at Carrington with the rest of the squad on Tuesday morning ahead of the trip down to London.
But De Gea – along with Ashley Young, Nemanja Matic, Diogo Dalot, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Eric Bailly – were all pictured in plain clothes while the rest of the team wore blue club tracksuits.
This appears to indicate all six will not be travelling down to London, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to give his fringe players a chance to impress against Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Brandon Williams was not pictured but is expected to be included in the squad and should stand in for Young at left-back if Luke Shaw remains short of match fitness.
Matic is closing in on a return to action but tomorrow’s game against his former side appears to have come too soon for the Serbian midfielder.
As for Dalot, Fosu-Mensah and Bailly, the trio are all recovering from injuries and were not expected to feature against the Blues.

Nemanja Matic was also not wearing a club tracksuit as he arrived
However, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were both in club gear at Carrington and could be fielded together in attack once more after their display at Norwich on Sunday.
Both forwards got on the scoresheet against the Canaries, although they also missed a penalty each in the 3-1 victory at Carrow Road.
Daniel James, Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard are also believed to be in the squad while Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo will make the trip.
Third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant was the final player spotted arriving in club gear at the back entrance to Carrington, although other players will have arrived at the front gate.

Anthony Martial will hope to get more minutes under his belt against Chelsea
Juan Mata is expected to be part of the squad
Jesse Lingard will be in the travelling party
Paul Pogba will not feature against the Blues as the Frenchman continues to struggle with an ankle problem.
The World Cup winner is not expected back until December so academy prospect James Garner could be handed a start alongside Scott McTominay or Fred in central midfield.
Speaking about the youngster after Sunday’s win, Solskjaer said: “For just 10, 15 minutes Jimmy played as well. I thought he was excellent, because he’s calmed us down when we wanted to see the game out.
“So we’ve not made a decision on who is going to play [at Chelsea] but you’ll probably see the two of them [Garner and Brandon Williams].”

Andreas Pereira arrived at the training ground with his girlfriend
Solskjaer went on to praise Fred and Pereira for their contributions in Pogba’s absence, saying: “Fred will probably take Paul’s position for a while now and he’s been brilliant for us, but Andreas has grown the last few games.
“His energy and running, chasing – he’s a different sort of no.10, he can play also in the central positions.
“So I’m delighted for Andreas – great professional, great attitude. He does his job to the best of his abilities.”
