GOOD EVENING FROM OLD TRAFFORD
Welcome to our live coverage of the match between Manchester United and Sheffield United, a fixture with consequences at both ends of the Premier League table.
It’s a Manchester one-two at the top, and after City’s demolition of West Bromwich Albion last night, it’s now United’s turn to take on a side threatened by relegation.
The reward for victory will be a return to the summit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, and they can call upon the morale-boosting beating of Liverpool in the cup on Sunday as they look to stretch their unbeaten run to 14 games in the league.
In contract, it’s more the reality of relegation than a threat that hangs over Sheffield United.
The bottom-of-the-table Blades are 12 points from safety having picked up just one league victory in this difficult second season back in the top-flight.
However, it was little more than a month ago that Chris Wilder’s team pushed Manchester United all the way at Bramall Lane, eventually falling valiantly to a narrow 3-2 defeat.
Marcus Rashford was the scourge of the South Yorkshire side that night with a brace, but the forward faces a race for fitness to make this evening after taking a knock to the knee at the weekend.
Yet Solskjaer will be able to call upon the likes of David de Gea, Fred, Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes, who were all rested in the FA Cup.
There’s no such luxury for Wilder. The Sheffield United boss could be without as many as nine senior players for the trip, a list that includes the suspended John Egan and the injured key duo of Sander Berg and Jack O’Connell.
We’ll have confirmation of the two teams shortly before the action gets underway at 8.15pm.
