A Republican, Mark Teixeria is the latest in a series of high-profile candidates who have found sudden opportunities to nab a safe seat in Congress. He made the announcement in a post on the social platform X, saying he’s a “lifelong conservative” and is running on principles to make Texas and the US “great.”
Mark Teixeria had played first base for four teams including the Texas Rangers for over 13 years. Teixeira pledged to be a supporter of President Donald Trump.

A World Series champion who played for the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, Mark Teixeria said in a statement he is “ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda.” “I’m ready to answer the call to serve my country, my state, and the conservative principles that have made Texas the envy of the nation,” he said, adding that he moved to Central Texas in 2021 and is an active member of the local Republican and Christian communities there.

“It takes teamwork to win — I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty,” he said. The seat became vacant after Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, announced last week he would run for state attorney general with Ken Paxton running for Senate. “Playing for the Texas Rangers and raising my family in the Lone Star State has been one of the greatest blessings of my life,” he said. “Now I’m ready to answer the call to serve my country, my state, and the conservative principles that made Texas the envy of the nation.”

Who is Mark Teixeria?
Mark Teixeira is a retired American professional baseball player. Teixeira played for more than four years in Texas before also playing for the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees. Throughout his career, he was an All-Star three times, won a Gold Glove five times and won the World Series with the Yankees in 2009. He retired from baseball after the 2016 season.
He also declared his opposition to abortion, vowed to work to end “forever wars” and called for congressional term limits.

On his campaign website, Teixeira laid out a slate of conservative priorities, including strengthening border security, deporting undocumented immigrants, expanding the Department of Government Efficiency to curb “wasteful spending,” and protecting Second Amendment rights.
He is the first Republican to launch a bid after Roy’s decision not to run, though others may soon follow. Bexar County GOP Vice Chair Kyle Sinclair told The Texas Tribune he’s weighing a possible campaign in the district.
