Barbara Walters, the iconic news anchor and broadcast journalist, has died at the age of 93, her publicist confirmed on Friday night (December 30).
Walters was well-known for her interviews with politicians such as Richard Nixon, Margaret Thatcher and Donald Trump, as well as stars like Barbra Streisand, Better Midler, and Ricky Martin.
Throughout her career Walters won 12 Emmy Awards and was “a trailblazer not only for female journalists but for all women,” her publicist, Cindi Berger, said.
Though she is usually known for discussing the private lives of the famous, Walters has been open about her own life and relationships.
In 2014 Walters said that she doesn’t think she was “very good at marriage”.
“It may be that my career was just too important,” she told ABC News. Walters had three husbands during her life.
Who was Barbara Walters’s first husband?
Walters married businessman Robert Henry Katz in 1955 at the Plaza Hotel.
The marriage was brief, and was annulled after a year, according to The Independent.
In her 2008 memoir, AuditionWalters wrote that during the marriage she was “quite miserable”.
While she dubbed Katz a “decent man,” Walters said it “became clearer every day that we had nothing in common”.
The journalist’s second and third marriages
Lee Guber was Walters’s second husband, and the two met on a blind date.
She tied the knot with the theatrical producer in 1963, but they divorced 13 years later. Guber died in 1988 at the age of 67 from brain cancer.
In 1984, Walters met her third husband, Merv Anderson, one of the founders and owners of Lorimar Productions. They married in 1986 and divorced in 1990.
Did Barbara Walters have children?
Walters had one daughter, Jacqueline Danforth, whom she adopted with Guber.
Now 54, Danforth set up a wilderness program for troubled teens in Northern Maine in 2001.
Walters opened up about her daughter in the 2014 news special Barbara Walters: Her Story. She explained how Danforth has always wanted to be “anonymous”.
“She just doesn’t like to be a celebrity,” Walters explained“she may be the only one in the world who doesn’t like to be a celebrity.”
