Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially stepped down from their royal posts in March.
Nearly six months have already passed since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left the British Monarchy. They first announced their exit plans in January following their six-week break from royal duties.
While the “bombshell” announcement has since sparked controversies, Queen Elizabeth shared her support publicly toward the Sussex couple. After finishing the last rounds of their engagement in March, they consequently flew out of the United Kingdom.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry took their announcement to Instagram, where they revealed their plans to exit. The couple wrote that they wanted to live a “financially independent” life outside the British Monarchy.
They also pointed out that they wanted to continue serving the British Throne while they pursue other ventures. However, this did not seemingly sit well with the senior royals, as well as the public. As a result, they ended up quitting and ceasing to represent the Queen.
Amid all the controversies, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex never clearly explained their actual reasons for leaving the royal life. Several royal experts have since tried to speculate and conclude things. Until recently, though, the former Suits actress seemingly hinted her true reasons for leaving the monarchy, according to the Daily Express.
Why Meghan Markle left
Earlier in August, Meghan Markle sat down for an interview with the “feminist icon,” Gloria Steinem. The two women discussed several topics, which include issues on suffrage and feminism.
Amid the interview, the Duchess of Sussex told Steinem that everyone is “linked” and “not ranked.” This led many to criticize her, considering that she still uses her royal titles, particularly the “Duchess of Sussex” honor.
Alongside the criticisms, several royal experts claimed that the former actress seemingly did not like “hierarchy” in the British Royal Family. The publication added that her statements “echoed” Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s claims on Finding Freedom.
The royal authors wrote that the royal-born Prince and his wife did not like the way Prince William and Kate Middleton took “precedence” over them. They reportedly felt “cut adrift” as they had to put projects aside.
Lack of respect for the hierarchy
Several royal experts, later on, claimed that many aides and staff did not like Meghan’s “lack of respect” for the hierarchy, according to the Daily Mail. Camilla Tominey suggested that the Sussex couple’s demands did not go well with the staff.
Other experts argued, however, that they find it “surprising” that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did not like hierarchy. They explained that the British Monarchy is “inherently hierarchical” in the first place. So, it is a “bizarre” thing that they have had issues with it.
