Cricket Australia have announced a spin-heavy provisional squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka and India. Veteran all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been named captain of the 15-member squad.

The 2021 champions have stacked their line-up with multiple spin options, signalling a clear strategy for the slower pitches expected across venues in Sri Lanka and India.

Pat Cummins, Cameron Green Return to Australia T20 World Cup Squad

Fast bowler Pat Cummins, all-rounder Cameron Green and young talent Cooper Connolly have all been included in the provisional squad despite missing Australia’s most recent T20I series against India.

Chair of selectors George Bailey said the panel had the advantage of choosing players best suited to conditions in the region, while also keeping an eye on fitness concerns ahead of the tournament.

Australia Opt for Spin-Heavy Strategy for India and Sri Lanka Conditions

Australia’s squad features strong spin depth, led by leg-spinner Adam Zampa. He will be supported by Matthew Kuhnemann, Cooper Connolly, and spin-capable all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short.

Explaining the selection approach, Bailey said the team’s recent success allowed selectors to focus on balance and versatility.

“The T20 side has enjoyed a long run of recent success, which enabled the panel to choose a balance of players across the variety of conditions Sri Lanka and India may present,” Bailey said, as quoted by the ICC.

Fitness Watch: Cummins, Hazlewood and Tim David

Several players remain under a fitness cloud, though selectors remain optimistic. Bailey confirmed that Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David are progressing well and are expected to be available for the World Cup.

He also stressed that the announced squad is provisional and changes can still be made before the final submission deadline.

No Left-Arm Seamer as Australia Make Key Selection Call

One notable omission from the squad is a left-arm seamer. With Mitchell Starc retired from T20Is and Spencer Johnson sidelined due to injury, Australia have opted for right-arm pacer Xavier Bartlett instead of a like-for-like replacement such as Ben Dwarshuis.

The decision reflects Australia’s broader focus on balance rather than strict role-for-role replacements.

Australia Group B Schedule at ICC T20 World Cup 2026

Australia have been placed in Group B alongside Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Oman.

The Aussies will begin their campaign against Ireland in Colombo on February 11. They will then face Zimbabwe on February 13, followed by a high-profile clash against hosts Sri Lanka on February 16. Australia’s final group stage match will be played against Oman on February 20.
