A tropical forested area equivalent to the size of France—including 108,000 km (the size of Iceland) of undisturbed forest—will be protected thanks to new legislation passed by the parliament of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with the Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor.
The Congo Basin: A Natural Treasure
The Congo Basin is earth’s largest tropical forest “carbon sink,” which is a natural area that absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it releases.
The Congo Basin is the world’s largest intact tropical forest, spanning 3.7 million square kilometers—about 60% of which lies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
This forest is home to 10,000 species (a third of which are found nowhere else), such as the Okapi, Red Colobus monkeys, and Shoebills. It’s trees absorb 1.5 billion tons of CO₂ annually.
However, growing threats like deforestation, industrial farming, climate change, and armed conflict jeopardize its future.
Thankfully, with strong leadership from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this bold plan is being implemented to protect and revitalize the Congo Basin forest and its communities.
