Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP colleagues have paid tribute to their outgoing leader after her announcement this morning.
Angela Crawley, the MP for Lanark and Hamilton East, said Ms Sturgeon “inspired a generation of women, like me, to become leaders in their communities”.
“She has demonstrated an ability to lead with empathy, compassion and integrity. I want to thank her for her friendship, her commitment to equality and her vision for Scotland,” Ms Crawley wrote.
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, quipped: “Of all the days to be back-to-back with visits and meetings!”
He added: “An inspirational leader to the end, Nicola is, by some distance, the greatest political leader in these isles. Scotland, and the independence movement, will be all the poorer without her leadership. I sincerely hope this isn’t the last we see of her in frontline party politics.”
