Everyone has their own way of saying certain words and phrases, so some people may be stunned to suddenly find out they are saying it wrong.
Even if you’re the world’s biggest fan of Nutella, there is a strong possibility you’ve been saying it incorrectly.
In honour of World Nutella Day, the team at Nutella has decided to end the debate on how to announce its iconic chocolate hazelnut spread.
In a poll conducted by the team, it was revealed that a whopping 88% of Brits mispronounce the iconic word. Of those, 78% are saying NUT-ella.
Only 12% of those polled pronounced it the correct way – “NOU-tella”.
Meanwhile, 6% think “NEW-tell-uh” is the correct pronunciation, and 3% said they simply don’t know how to say it.
For World Nutella Day, the team has confirmed the correct pronunciation by saying that the emphasis should actually be put on the “N” and “OU”.
Fans of the delicious spread took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the revelation.
One person said: “Finding out that Nutella is pronounced Nootella is why I have trust issues.”
Another simply said: “I was today years old when I found out Nutella was pronounced “New-tell-uh”.
James Stewart, Marketing Director for Nutella, Ferrero UK & Ireland, said: “As Nutella is enjoyed in every corner of the world, there has long been some fun debates on how it should be pronounced.
“Our Nutella team wanted to share how we pronounce the iconic spread’s name. We emphaise the ‘NOU’ in ‘NOU-tella’, but we don’t mind how our fans decide to pronounce it – the most important thing to us is that you enjoy it!”
