We have unveiled the latest defence in the fight for environmental protection: Oceania. This purpose-built sailing vessel marks a significant milestone as the first ship to be permanently based in the Asia-Pacific region, ready to tackle the pressing environmental challenges facing our oceans today.
Thank to your support, we upgraded the vessel with renewable energy systems, Starlink communications, new electronics, extra bunks, improved cockpit protection, and additional tie-down points. Oceania is now a fit-for-purpose campaigning machine, and will enable us to bear witness, collaborate with communities, and take peaceful direct action against environmental threats in the region.
David Ritter, CEO of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, says
“The Oceania is one of us now, so let’s dream big for the interventions that it can make – that only Greenpeace can make, as a privilege and an obligation – as we fulfill our mission and mandate across the wide waves of the seas and oceans of the Pacific and Australia.”
The vessel’s first mission is set to begin with a 3,500 nautical mile journey to Western Australia, to confront fossil fuel giant Woodside’s massive offshore gas development, the Burrup Hub. This campaign continues the work started by the Rainbow Warrior’s tour in the region last year
Beyond holding polluters accountable, Oceania will also visit places like Lord Howe Island Marine Park showcasing ocean protection and how nature can flourish if given a chance. Just outside the protected zone lies a rich underwater volcanic world with unique marine species at risk from industrial fishing. The vessel will document and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, serving as a platform for scientific research.
