A pair of Thanksgiving Day earthquakes were reported Thursday just around dinnertime in Riverside County.
They occurred just after 5:30 p.m. in the San Jacinto Mountains about six miles southwest of Idyllwild. The first was a magnitude 3.8 quake, which was followed a minute later by a magnitude 3.5 temblor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quakes were about four miles from Valle Vista, eight miles from Hemet, nine miles from San Jacinto and 13 miles from Beaumont. Residents reported feeling light to moderate shaking from the quakes as far east as Cathedral City and Indio and as far west as Murrieta.
A spokesperson for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said there were no reports of damage with the small quakes.
The Southern California quakes followed a pair of quakes near San Juan Bautista on the Central Coast. The first was a magnitude 3.9 earthquake at 12:48 p.m., followed by a magnitude 4.0 quake at 12:57 p.m.
In the last 10 days, there had been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered near the location of the Riverside County quakes.
An average of 234 earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.0 and 4.0 occur each year in California and Nevada, according to a recent three-year data sample.
