Patrick Mahomes is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the National Football League. Now, he is seeking a third consecutive Super Bowl title with the Kansas City Chiefs; this would earn the team the distinction of being the first-ever to accomplish that feat in the NFL.
Mahomes was drafted in 2017 but sat out all but one game during his rookie year. Since taking over the starting job in 2018, Mahomes has led the franchise to three Super Bowl victories and four Super Bowl appearances in the last five years. He’s also led the Chiefs to the AFC Conference Championship in each of the six seasons he’s been the team’s starting QB.
Some say that if he keeps up the stellar performance, the 29-year-old could be on pace to challenge Tom Brady as the winningest quarterback by Super Bowl wins. (Brady has seven.)

Who is Patrick Mahomes? Background & education
Patrick Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas on Sept. 17, 1995. His father was a former MLB pitcher for six teams — including the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets — from 1992 to 2003.
Mahomes was a multisport athlete in high school, playing football, baseball, and basketball. He excelled in football and was recruited by Texas Tech University, where he played for three years (2014–2016) with a 13–19 record.
Despite the combined losing record at Texas Tech, Mahomes was a standout player with numerous NCAA records and accolades, including most yards gained in a game: 819 yards against Oklahoma on Oct. 22, 2016.
Patrick Mahomes’ NFL career, contracts & salary
Mahomes opted out of a fourth year at Texas Tech and entered the 2017 NFL Draft. As the 10th overall pick, he was selected in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs, which signed him to a guaranteed four-year $16.4 million contract with a $10.1 million signing bonus and a fifth-year option. (Coincidentally, that 10th-round pick was given up by the Buffalo Bills in exchange for three picks.)
Mahomes played just one game in his rookie season as a backup quarterback with the Chiefs. In 2018, he was elevated to starting quarterback and ended the regular season with a 12–4 record, and lost the AFC Championship to the New England Patriots — just a game shy of reaching the Super Bowl. In 2019, Mahomes led the Chiefs to another 12–4 winning record and its first Super Bowl title in 50 years.

In 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year extension contract valued at $450 million, plus $28 million carried over from his rookie contract. Incentives included $25 for winning the MVP title and reaching the Super Bowl starting in 2022.
At the time, Mahomes’ contract was the most valuable in sports, and subsequent record-breaking sports contracts for other athletes would follow. At the start of the 2024 NFL season, Dak Prescott signed the most lucrative contract: $240 million for four years with the Dallas Cowboys.
Mahomes would again lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl, winning back-to-back games in the 2022 and 2023 seasons and taking MVP titles as well.
At the beginning of the 2024 season, Mahomes’ average annual pay was $45 million, which landed him 12th among the league’s 32 starting quarterbacks by salary. (His contract was restructured to pay him $52.65 million per year from 2023 to 2026.)

Why did Patrick Mahomes restructure his contract?
Mahomes’ $45 million annual salary was quickly beaten out by several other quarterbacks in the years after he signed his massive deal, including Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mahomes was undoubtedly more accomplished than the quarterbacks ahead of him, but his contract with the Chiefs was set until 2031. In order to satisfy the three-time Super Bowl-winning superstar, the Chiefs restructured his contract in 2023 to pay him $210.6 million of the deal from 2023 to 2026, or about $52.65 million per year.
This deal put him within the ballpark of the other players while still locking him into a solid tenure with the team. Moreover, Mahomes and the Chiefs are reportedly going to look into the contract again after 2026 to see if there’s potential to restructure once again.

Kansas City Royals
Sports teams have become a hot new investment for many athletes. The industry is familiar to them, and team valuations have grown extremely quickly over the last few decades, making sports franchise equity an attractive asset class for those with access. Athletes just have to look for one that’s not in their sport.
Baseball was the first option for Mahomes, which made sense because he played both football and baseball growing up, and his dad was an MLB pitcher.
In 2020, Mahomes became a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, the Major League Baseball team that plays in the arena right beside the Chiefs’ own. The Royals are 27th of 30 MLB teams in terms of valuation at $1.2 billion, already up from a $1 billion valuation in 2020.
Formula 1
More recently, Mahomes added another team to his list, joining athletes like teammate Travis Kelce and Rory McIlroy alongside celebrities like Ryan Reynolds and Michael B. Jordan in purchasing a stake in the Alpine Formula 1 Team.
Forbes valued the team at $1.4 billion, based on its latest estimate in 2023.

Mahomes is also a staple on State Farm TV ads alongside his teammate Travis Kelce and coach Andy Reid.
He’s also appeared on television for companies like Subway and Head and Shoulders. Other endorsements include Oakley, Essentia Water, and Logan Paul and KSI’s growing sports drink, Prime.
