Police are investigating two major crashes on South Australia’s regional roads, as well as a drowning south of Adelaide on Christmas Day.
Key points:
- A 37-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car on Yorke Peninsula
- Her death came hours after another serious crash, and the drowning of a man south of Adelaide
- Police are also investigating a stabbing in Adelaide’s north
A pedestrian was killed overnight when she was struck by a Suzuki SUV at Port Julia, near Port Vincent, on Yorke Peninsula.
The collision happened on the St Vincent Highway, where police and other emergency services were called just before 9:30pm.
“Sadly, a 37-year-old woman from Marryatville died at the scene. The driver of the Suzuki, a 61-year-old woman from the Yorke Peninsula, was not injured,” police said.
The woman’s death is the 98th on SA’s roads in 2021.
Several hours earlier, a truck crashed and rolled at Lake Gilles on Eyre Peninsula about 3:15pm.
This morning, police said Major Crash investigators had arrived at the scene and that the Eyre Highway remains closed between Kimba and Iron Knob.
Police are also preparing a report for the coroner on the drowning of a 27-year-old man at Port Elliot yesterday.
Emergency services were called to Horseshoe Bay after reports a man had fallen off rocks and into the water.
Police said the man, from Prospect, “was brought to shore by surf life savers but sadly he could not be revived”.
Man arrested after woman stabbed
A woman was yesterday rushed to hospital after she was stabbed in the chest and arm in Adelaide’s north.
The 29-year-old is in a critical but stable condition in the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) and her alleged attacker, a 32-year-old from Andrews Farmman, is likely to be charged with attempted murder, police said.
The incident allegedly occurred in Ballard Road at Smithfield Plains about 5:15pm, and police said the knife believed to have been used in the attack was found in nearby Hoole Street.
“About two hours later a man was located in a public toilet at a fast-food restaurant on Curtis Road at Munno Para with self-inflicted injuries,” police said.
The man was taken to the RAH for a mental health assessment, police said.
