When we talk about the currently stacked lightweight roster, there’s no way we can miss out on the 27-year-old George Kambosos. The ‘Ferocious’ is unbeaten with a record of 19-0 (10 KOs) and is on the verge of bagging a title shot against Teofimo Lopez. He is the mandatory challenger and his manager Peter Kahn envisions him to fight for the unified titles.
That said, Kahn compared Kambosos with Manny Pacquiao and revealed how he can vanquish the undefeated Teofimo Lopez. Following a win over Vasyl Lomachenko, ‘Take Over’ Lopez hasn’t announced his next fight. While boxing fans want to see him face Devin Haney, George Kambosos can stand in the middle.
Peter Kahn connected with Sirius XM Boxing and revealed his plans of staging Teofimo Lopez’s next fight against Kambosos. It’s still not a ‘done deal’ but promoters are working their way through it.
“We are getting close, George Kambosos is the mandatory for Teofimo Lopez and we have a formal proposal to Top Rank that will basically express our offer to bring Teofimo Lopez to Australia and defend all of his titles against George. George is the only mandatory for Teofimo , he is the only mandatory and right now he is up and if Teofimo accepts, they will be fighting for those belts,” said Kahn.
He added, “And if not, he will have to vacate the belts and George will fight for the vacant titles.”
Does George Kambosos have the speed to beat Teofimo Lopez?
According to Kahn, Kambosos can counter Lopez with his speed. He billed it as the ‘x-factor’ that made Manny Pacquiao the octuple world champion in the sport. Even though Lopez comparably has a more alluring record, Kahn still found out ways for Kambosos to beat ‘Take Over’.
He continued, “At the end of the day it’s about having the strategy, implementing that strategy. You have heard the expression, ‘speed kills’. Well, George Kambosos biggest asset is his speed and the way to mitigate Teofimo’s power, the way to mitigate Teofimo’ speed ”
Kahn added, “It’s the reason Manny Pacquiao has been able to win world championships in eight different weight divisions.”
At this stage, Lopez might not want to vacate his world titles. So, if Kambosos adamantly demands his mandatory spot, Lopez would have no other option but to fight him. It can further delay a champion vs champion clash between him and WBC title-holder Devin Haney.
