Piers Morgan has spoken out about his friend Kate Garraway calling her ‘one of the bravest most inspiring people I’ve ever known’ as he husband Derek Draper continues to battle the aftereffects of coronavirus
Piers Morgan has praised his friend and ex-colleague Kate Garraway for how she’s coping during the “true hell she’s going through” with her husband Derek’s Covid-19 struggle.
The 56-year-old presenter spoke up about his former GMB co-star after she scooped the award for Best Documentary for her ITV project Finding Derek at the National Television Awards last night.
The documentary followed Kate and her family during an extremely tough time in their lives as they dealt with the aftermath of Derek falling critically ill with Covid-19 in March 2020 and his long road to recovery.
Derek left hospital earlier this year and has been recovering at home with his family by his side since.
Piers took to Twitter to tell fans few people understand just how tough life has been for Kate.

He wrote: “Love her. @kategarraway. One of the bravest most inspiring people I’ve ever known. People have no idea of the true hell she’s going through because she’s always putting others first & never complains.”
He signed off the post with a plea for her husband’s recovery adding: “Just pray her Derek comes out the other side.”
Piers, who left GMB show earlier this year, called the now award winning documentary “heart-breaking”.
Accepting the award, Kate said: “It was a hugely brave decision of ITV to commission this, they didn’t really know what they were making.
“A story about bereavement and triumph. In the end, really, it ended up being something between the two.
“Thank you so much for voting, I wonder if the reason why you did is because our story is your story. I think we’ve all been touched by the pandemic, whether it’s livelihood or mental health.
“I just want to say to all the Darcey’s and Billy’s and Derek’s and Derek’s families, whatever you’re going through, you’re not forgotten. We want the joy back, we want it to be over but the fight goes on.
“But most of all Derek, you should be here and should have had the chance to tell your own story. Derek, you’re going to get the chance, believe! The hope is real! Thank you so much.”
Kate also took to social media with a heartfelt tribute to Derek and everyone involved in the film in a caption on her Instagram post, where she posted a screenshot of her chat with her husband.
She posted: “Wow. Thank you so so much. Have been in such an emotional daze all night I failed to get a single photo of me or the brilliant production team who made Finding Derek!!”
She continued: “But maybe this is the photo you most wanted to see anyway – me FaceTiming Derek (via Darcey’s phone!) to tell him we had won!
“From him and from the bottom of our family’s hearts THANK YOU. For all who are struggling on and holding on to hope – this is for you.
“And to all the other wonderful nominations in the category, proud to be among you and I salute your brilliance & bravery xxx”.
Today, also marks Kate and Derek’s 16th wedding anniversary.
