Boris Johnson will hold face-to-face meetings with four world leaders today as his first G7 summit draws to a close.
The prime minister is going to sit down with his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison – a day after England’s stunning victory in the Ashes.
Mr Morrison told reporters in Biarritz he was expecting Mr Johnson to give him a hard time about the once-in-a-generation comeback in the third test at Headingley.
Mr Johnson is also going to hold talks with Japan’s Shinzo Abe, Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el Sisi and departing Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
The devastating wildfires in the Amazon are set to be at the top of the agenda as the gathering of the world’s richest democracies enters its final day.
Leaders will discuss how best to protect the environment, with Mr Johnson pledging £10m to help prevent the rainforest’s destruction.
The funding has been earmarked to protect and restore the habitat, and the prime minister has called on his counterparts to step up their efforts to save endangered species.
Mr Johnson said: “In a week where we have all watched, horrified, as the Amazon rainforest burns before our eyes, we cannot escape the reality of the damage we are inflicting on the natural world.
“The planet faces two immense threats: Climate change and biodiversity loss. These are two sides of the same coin – it is impossible to solve one challenge without fixing the other.
“We cannot stop climate change without protecting the natural environment and we can’t restore global nature without tackling climate change.”
Environmental campaigners have reacted sceptically to Mr Johnson’s pledge, given how reports have suggested that his government is planning to cut fuel duty.
Shadow international trade secretary Barry Gardiner said £10m is an “embarrassingly tiny contribution” – adding the “tragedy unfolding in the Amazon should not be used as a PR stunt”.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the G7 summit, has said the leaders of the world’s major industrialised nations – the US, Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada, France and the UK – are close to finalising a deal on “technical and financial” help for the countries affected.
In other developments at the G7, the White House has said Donald Trump was “surprised” that Iran’s top diplomat, Mohammad Javad Zarif, had been invited to the summit.
French officials said the unannounced visit was designed to lower tensions stoked by the re-imposition of sanctions on Tehran following the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear treaty and the seizure of two oil tankers.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson told Sky News on Sunday that the chances of a Brexit deal are “improving” now his messages on the £39bn divorce bill and Irish border backstop have “landed” with EU leaders.
Speaking to Sky’s Beth Rigby, he said there was a “reasonable chance” that the UK will leave the trading bloc on 31 October with an exit deal.
However, he reiterated his stance that the UK’s current withdrawal agreement is “dead” – and warned that the UK is not legally obliged to stump up the full £39bn divorce bill under no deal.
Mr Johnson later told reporters that Donald Trump is “very gung-ho” about a major UK-US trade deal.
The prime minister and president held their first formal meeting on Sunday, with Mr Trump praising Mr Johnson as the “right man for the job” of delivering Brexit.
Despite Mr Trump’s promises of a “very big trade deal” on the margins of the G7 summit, Mr Johnson has played down the prospects of a transatlantic deal being concluded within a year.
