Lie-flat beds and free fizz at the posh end and ‘generous coffee service’ at the back: Travel experts give British Airways’ Covid-era Dreamliner service the thumbs up

  • The Points Guy UK jumped on a BA 787 from Heathrow to Athens
  • Two travel experts from the site recorded footage of their experiences
  • Dreamliners have been temporarily used on the route to shift backed-up cargo

The pandemic means that all airlines have had to restrict their service.

But even with tweaks to make flying safe, it seems it’s still a joy to fly with British Airways.

That’s the verdict from two travel experts from The Points Guy UK site who recently boarded a BA Dreamliner, cameras in hand, to record footage of their onboard experiences in business class and economy.

The flight was from Heathrow Terminal 5 to Athens, a service normally operated by the Airbus A320.

However, Boeing 787 Dreamliners have been temporarily used on the route once a week recently to shift backed-up cargo.

Flying upfront in the posh end was Nicky Kelvin, the director of content, who paid 18,500 Avios plus £17.50 tax for his ticket.

His verdict? He said he was ‘incredibly impressed with the comfortable lie-flat seat’, said the meal wasn’t huge, ‘but was delicious, especially the chocolate dessert’, and enjoyed his free fizz – ‘a bonus on any flight’.

He also enjoyed the inflight entertainment system, a feature that BA short-haul aircraft don’t have.

As it was a short-haul flight, business-class goodies such as an amenity kit, blanket and pillow weren’t offered.

BA has removed the option to buy hot meals and drinks in economy to help make service Covid-safe.

British Airways, American Airlines and Oneworld are running a Covid-19 testing trial on selected flights from the U.S to London Heathrow in a combined effort to scientifically demonstrate how testing for the virus can reopen international travel and quash quarantine requirements.
