Room 301 of the Rothberg International School at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem saw an unusual transformation at the start of the semester. A group of young men and women entered the room – some fresh out of high school, others back from a long grueling round of combat in the IDF, and still others continuing their studies after starting their academic journey elsewhere. Youngsters from all over the world – the United States, Canada, England, Germany, China – entered as individuals with the trappings of their separate cultures and identities. By the time they left, they were united by an extraordinary bond: now donning Rothberg-logo hoodies, they were the pioneering cohort of the Hebrew University’s first international BA program.

The decision to launch this new International BA program took shape some time ago. Our vision was clear – to offer young men and women from all around the world a warm home in which to start an academic journey like no other. The best teachers, facilities and opportunities would be complemented by a curriculum that would be comprehensive and challenging. Bright young minds would come together to explore fields such as entrepreneurship, business, hi-tech, journalism, communication, culture, and the arts. For those drawn to the Hebrew University’s tradition of scholarly excellence, this program would be a bridge to advanced academic pursuits. The program is designed holistically; it includes on-campus and off-campus experiences. It blends intense coursework with enriching workshops and excursions. Our graduates will be prepared to lead in Israel and abroad. The education obtained and the networks and connections forged in the course of their three-year program would provide a first step in a lifelong journey of discovery, success and leadership.

Our first Open Day to introduce the program was held on campus on October 6, 2023, on our Jerusalem campus. Dozens gathered from around the world – Vietnam, Thailand, Canada, England, The United States, France, Germany, Peru, Ukraine, Russia, Hong Kong and many other countries. The enthusiasm was palpable, and we looked forward to welcoming these students the following year. But the next morning, October 7, our world was shaken by tragedy, and the idea of launching an international BA program seemed further away than ever.

This month as we welcomed the new cohort to the Hebrew University, our fears were assuaged. We realized that true to the spirit of the institution that is hosting them, these young students and their parents believe that education cannot be defeated or stalled. Violence and fear will not stand in the way of progress, determination and hope. After the orientation we shared some nibbles and had a chat, and I had a chance to hear a little about the experiences that had led each student to Jerusalem. Their motivations were as diverse as their nationalities, cultures and faiths.

Some sought to explore their Jewish identities after seeing their life at home and on campuses abroad shaken by antisemitism and gross harassment and violence. Others felt called to contribute to a nation at war that needs the best and brightest to shape a brighter future. Some were inspired by their admiration for the Hebrew University, a renowned university in a nation celebrated for its innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. With the Industrial Park set to open at our Safra campus on Givat Ram, the Hebrew University is the ideal destination for those committed to a path of excellence and striving.

Regardless of these differences, they all shared a common purpose: to obtain an education that empowers them to contribute to and bolster communities locally and globally. Each student I talked to expressed a desire to improve the situation of those around them by leading change, creating an impact and making a difference. I am eagerly waiting to see these brave, selfless and driven students do just that in the years to come.
