A mass search has recommenced for a fisherman after the kayak he was in was spotted empty and drifting from shore an hour later.
An extensive search is underway for a missing fisherman after an empty kayak was spotted floating in the open sea off the coast of South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula.
The exploration began at about 5.45pm on Thursday after police received reports that the kayak was drifting about 80 metres from the Rapid Bay shore between the town’s caravan park and jetty.
It was only about an hour earlier that a man seen fishing from inside the same kayak.
Operations halted overnight but recommenced on Friday morning with the Police Water Operations Unit — comprising of local police, a police helicopter, SES crews and Sea Rescue volunteers — searching for the man.
The kayak and a burley bucket have since been brought to shore.
Anyone with information, who recognises the kayak or knows of anyone who was fishing in the area and had not made contact yet are asked to call the Police Assistance Line on 131444.
