Synopsis: Cloud cover kept temperatures a little bit cooler on Wednesday (83 degrees) but only 1 degree from tying a record set back in 1921. High pressure in the Gulf combined with airflow out of the southwest has and will continue to keep South Texas on the warm side (Highs in the 80’s and lows in the 60’s) through Saturday with cloud cover potentially keeping the area cooler on Thursday (today) as well.
Low level moisture, lighter winds and dry mid-levels will provide the setting for patchy and dense fog development that could result in a Special Weather Statement (Fog Advisory) the next few nights and mornings.
In the long term for the extended period, days 3 to 7, Friday through Wednesday, cold air up in Canada (a very cold airmass) looks to be moving south and headed into South Texas Saturday night into Sunday morning. The cold air and some storms will contribute to a drop in temperatures east of the Rocky Mountains and south into Texas. The front will move southwest and across the southern Plains Friday into Saturday, while more systems move across the Rocky Mountains and Southern Plains.
When the front moves through South Texas Saturday night into Sunday morning, then the meeting up with Gulf moisture and the stored energy from the sun could strike up a shower or two but rain chances for now will stay around 20-30 percent. Behind the front (from the north) colder/drier air will move into South Texas allowing for temperatures to drop into the 30’s allowing for a potential freeze (Monday morning for a few hours) as well as wind chill temperatures dropping down into the 20’s (Sunday morning). The winds could also be enough for Fire Weather (Red Flag Conditions) on Sunday afternoon. This would require Relative Humidifies of 25 percent or less (for several hours), 20 mph winds and temperatures generally 70 degrees or warmer. The dry conditions and the winds will be there, but temperatures might be short of the 70 degrees mark as temperatures stay in the 50’s.
