Tim Tszyu went 36 minutes with Terrell Gausha in freezing cold Minneapolis and won, despite suffering from a respiratory illness during fight week.
Tszyu kept his sickness a secret in the lead-up, but admitted post-win that his US experience was a bit more painful than he let on.
“I had one hell of a prep, man,” Tszyu told Main Event’s Ben Damon.
“Two days before the fight I was coughing like a dog.
“Weight was a problem as well, but you know what, I just stuck through [it]got back up, faced adversity in training camp, in the fight, and I got the job done against a world-rated opponent.”
Tszyu struggled more than usual to make weight, and was knocked down in the first round against Gausha, but came through it all to prove he belongs among the elite in the super welterweight division.
“Oh man, it was horrible,” Tszyu added.
“I couldn’t breathe. Even now, it’s still in my lungs. For the two weeks I was here in America, it was hard work.
“I was trying to drink water and get through it, and not show it to anyone. I didn’t want the media finding out, and having excuses and s*** like that. But it is what it is.”
Tszyu (21-0-0) won via unanimous decision (116-111, 115-111, 114-113).
