What did Ricky Gervais say about The Office?
Popular UK sitcom The Office celebrated its 20th anniversary on 9th July 2021.
Having been written by British comedian Ricky Gervais, the star reflected upon the iconic show’s success in an interview with the BBC.
The interview reports that when considering the issue of greater political correctness in a hypothetical modern-day version of the show, Gervais stated:
” I mean now it would be cancelled. I’m looking forward to when they pick out one thing and try to cancel it. Someone said they might try to cancel it one day, and I say, ‘Good let them cancel it. I’ve been paid!’ “
Comedian addresses ‘cancelling’ comment
After his comment regarding the show being ‘cancelled’ began trending online, @rickygervais took to Twitter to address the supposed statement.
By providing his actual quote during the interview, Gervais debunks the rumour that he said the sitcom would be cancelled if it were made today.
The comedian finalised his tweet by confirming that the phrase was ‘Clearly a joke.’
When asked whether or not he would include the same material in a modern-day release, Ricky suggested that more things now have the ability to ridicule.

“There’s a weird myth that I whine about being censored or cancelled.”
