As the UK’s first prime minister of Indian heritage, the public is curious about Rishi Sunak’s background, including his wife and parents.
Rishi Sunak has won the race to become the UK’s next leader after beating rival Penny Mordaunt. Sunak was poised to become the next prime minister as the former chancellor quickly racked up supporters. Just hours before the 2pm deadline, he received publicised support from 193 MPs, compared to Mordaunt’s 26.
House of Commons leader Mordaunt dropped out of the running two minutes before the cut-off time. “We owe it to the country, to each other and to Rishi to unite and work together for the good of the nation,” she tweeted.
Sunak’s victory marks the country’s first PM from an Indian background, while the Cabinet has become more culturally diverse over the years.
The ex-chancellor’s wealth is no secret as The Guardian claims he and his wife have a combined net worth of about £730 million. So, what line of business are his parents in and how did they inspire Sunak’s commitment to politics?
Rishi Sunak’s parents are in the medical field
Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton to his parents Yashvir and Usha Sunak. His father, Kenya-born Yashvir, worked as an NHS GP, while his mother, Usha, runs Southampton’s Bassett pharmacy. Usha was born in Tanganyika, which is now known as Tanzania.
His parents are Hindus of Punjabi descent; they migrated to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s and met in the UK.
Sunak has proudly opened up about his parents’ UK beginnings and how their dedication has inspired his goals for the government.
“These are the values that I was brought up with,” he told news outlets during his summer campaign against Liz Truss. “Strong family, community service, small business.”
“I want to create a country where hard work is rewarded, where families are strong and supported and where aspiration is something that is celebrated.”
He also noted on his website how the Sunak family’s contribution to the local community encouraged him to become Richmond, Yorkshire’s member of parliament.
“I wanted to make that same positive difference to people,” the PM writes.
Sunak is married to investment company director Akshata Murty
The new PM is married to his wife of 13 years, Akshata Murty. The couple reportedly tied the knot in a ceremony in Bangalore.
Rishi’s philosophy, politics and economics education at Oxford led him to study for his master’s at Stanford, where he met his future wife.
Akshata is the daughter of Indian billionaire NR Narayana Murthy, the founder of the multinational IT company Infosys. The Guardian labels Murthy as the “Bill Gates of India,” and his daughter reportedly has a 0.91% stake in the company, valued at about £700 million.
According to her LinkedIn, Akshata, 42, went on to study apparel industry manufacturing at Los Angeles’ fashion school FIDM, which launched her brand, Akshata Designs.
The mother-of-two is also listed as director of the capital and private equity firm Catamaran Ventures, luxury menswear brand New & Lingwood, and gym chain Digme Fitness.
