This weekend saw the final two days play in North Ayrshire Ice Hockey Club’s Ronnie Miller Memorial Tournament.

The two weekends of action saw teams from across Scotland partake, as well as being joined by clubs from elsewhere in the UK such as Belfast, Solway, Leeds and Billingham.

This second Saturday and Sunday of action saw teams competing in the under 10s, 14s and 19s categories at the tournament held at Auchenharvie ice rink.

The tournament hosts, North Ayrshire, were represented by the Sabres, Stars and Devils at these respective age groups, while fellow Ayrshire side Kilmarnock Ice Hockey Club also sent a squad to Stevenston.

Day one’s playing saw teams compete in a round robin format, with the final few matches completed the next day before the top four teams competed in the semi final stage.

In the under 10s tournament, the North Ayrshire Sabres displayed what they are capable of, finishing second in the round robin stage and progressing to the semi final.

The young side unfortunately missed out in the last four match, missing out to the travelling Belfast Giants.

At under 14s level, the North Ayrshire Stars also progressed into the semi finals, after a fourth place round robin finish. They would also unfortunately not progress into the final match as they were defeated by English side, the Leeds Junior Knights.

North Ayrshire’s last hope of a finalist was in the oldest, under 19s, age group where the Devils faced off against fellow Scottish side Kirkaldy in the last four.

It was not to be though, as the home side exited the tournament at the same stage.

It brought to an end an excellent two weekends of action, honouring a legend of the club.

A spokesperson said: “We would like to thank everyone involved in making this weekend a success.

“We were honoured to have the family of Ronnie Miller at the rink, and hope that Ronnie was looking down on both weekends with his trademark smile.

While club chairman Scott Campbell added: “ I am so proud to have got this event back up and running, and to have it named after a sadly missed friend and irreplaceable member of the NAIHC family and we hope to see you all at next seasons event.”
