The TV and radio presenter, who turns 34 today, took to Twitter to voice his displeasure – although, in typical Rylan style, it wasn’t all serious.
‘WhatsApp down on my birthday – homophobic,’ he joked, presumably after realising that he’d received no happy birthday texts from friends and family.
Users started reporting issues with WhatsApp just after 8am this morning, with 12,000 reports registered to the website Down Detector by 8.30am.
People trying to send messages on the app said that while they could open conversations, they couldn’t get any texts to reach their friends.
The brief outage meant that several WhatsApp regulars like Rylan were forced to go to Twitter in order to interact with one another.
Rylan, who doesn’t exactly mind using Twitter to have a laugh, was clearly left spinning, but he did manage to derive some humour from the situation.
When one of his fans made a risqué joke that WhatsApp ‘wouldn’t be the only thing going down’ on Rylan on his special today, Rylan confirmed that, yes, in fact, it would be.
‘Sadly trust me it is,’ he responded.
WhatsApp made users aware that it had been notified of the issue and was taking steps to resolve it. By midday, the service was back to normal.
The app, which was first unveiled in 2009, is estimated to have over two billion active users worldwide.
Rylan hasn’t tweeted since WhatsApp came back to life, which indicates that he had dozens – if not hundreds – of birthday messages to respond to.
Thankfully, the presenter wasn’t the only person who saw the funny side of WhatsApp’s temporary downtime, with many users taking the situation lightly.
Many people laughed among themselves as several asked: ‘Am I the only person who’s come to Twitter to see if WhatsApp is down?’
And, of course, any opportunity like this is normally a goldmine for great memes, with people across the world joining in.
