Black History Month launched in the UK with the ‘Proud to Be’ campaign which encourages people to share what they are proud to be on social media. Local authorities also raised the pan-African flag to mark the start of events for the month across the country.
It is now in its 34th year and has a renewed focus on black British resistance to racism after last year’s Black Lives Matter protests celebrating key figures who have made significant contributions and fuelled positive change.

What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of Black communities and it provides the opportunity to remember black history across the world.
The month-long festival includes educational events, exhibitions, shows, and installations across the globe that raise awareness of history and celebrate traditions, customs and cultures.
‘Proud to Be’ Campaign for Black History Month
Black History Month has launched its ‘Proud to Be’ campaign which inspires people to share what they are proud to be on social media.
Editor of Black History Month UK, Catherine Ross said: “It’s been a challenging time for many Black and Brown people, with so much in the media about racism, inequality and injustice”.
Ross continued: “We wanted the theme of Black History Month 2021 to focus on celebrating being Black or Brown, and to inspire and share the pride people have in their heritage and culture – in their own way, in their own words.”.

Imperial War Museum in London
On 20th October, the Imperial War Museum in London will be opening an exhibition featuring the inspiring stories of black men and women during World War II. One of the key figures that will be featured is Billy Strachan who sold his bicycle and saxophone to pay for a voyage from Jamaica to Britain to join the RAF.
Black History River Cruise
The Black History River Cruise along the River Thames will take you from the Temple of Greenwich across London showing you the thousands of years of African/ Caribbean history on display. With special historical guests including Phyliss Wheatley and General Damas sharing inspirational stories and informed historical commentary, this three-hour cultural cruise is not to be missed!
Mayfair Sunday Jazz Afternoon ft. OGGs
