May 12 was chosen for International Nurses Day because it coincides with the birth date of Florence Nightingale, perhaps the most famous nurse in history.
Born in 1820 in Florence, she was an English statistician and is credited as the founder of modern nursing.
She worked as a nurse during the Crimean War in 1853-1856. Visiting the wounded soldiers at night, it earned Florence the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp”.
