It’s estimated that around 30 per cent of people suffer from insomnia, or the chronic inability to fall asleep, stay asleep or achieve restorative high-quality sleep. Herbal teas have always been a popular choice when it comes to relaxing and unwinding after a long day. For centuries, they have been used around the world as natural sleep remedies. What is the best tea proven to aid a good night’s rest?
For years, chamomile tea has been used as a natural remedy to reduce inflammation, decrease anxiety and help treat insomnia.
In fact, chamomile tea is commonly regarded as a mild tranquilliser by some. Chamomile tea is a popular herbal tea that may offer a variety of health benefits.
It is well known for it’s content of flavones, a class of antioxidants that reduce inflammation that often leads to chronic disease, such as cancer and heart disease.
In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, chamomile was investigated and how it could help with sleep.
The study noted: “Chamomile is widely regarded as a mild tranquilliser and sleep-inducer.
“Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin that binds to receptors in the brain.
“Patients reported to have immediately fallen into a deep sleep lasting for 90 minutes after drinking the tea.”
There is also some evidence that drinking chamomile tea may boost the immune system, reduce anxiety and depression and improve skin health.
In addition, chamomile tea has some unique properties that may improve sleep quality.
Another study in 34 adults found those who consumed 270mg of chamomile extract twice daily for 28 days fell asleep 15 minutes faster and experienced less nighttime wakening, compared to those who did not consume the extract.
In a 2016 study found that women who drank chamomile tea for two weeks reported an improved sleep quality, compared to non-tea drinkers.
Those who drank chamomile tea also had fewer symptoms of depression, which is commonly associated with sleep problems.
The results of the studies were encouraging and further proved chamomile’s ability to aid in a peaceful night’s rest.
The proven effects of chamomile include a reduction of anxiety, allergy fighter, insomnia cure, helping with PMS, muscles spasm and gastrointestinal disorders.
Chamomile can be diffused at home, drank as a tea, apply the oil form, or it could even be used as toothpaste or a mouthwash.
