The vast majority of new energy generating capacity added in the United States in 2024 came from solar, according to data released this month by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Solar was 81% of new capacity that came online during the first eleven months of 2024 and 99% in November alone.
“Today, we can power our lives with renewable energy more efficiently and affordably than ever before,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research & Policy Center. “The choice before us is whether we will power our lives with clean renewable power or continue to use polluting energy sources. It’s up to us.”
Solar added in 2024 through November, is projected to generate almost six times more electricity than new natural gas capacity installed over the same time period according to analysis of the data by the SUN DAY Campaign.
