IT is a sad day for Saltcoats town centre, as one of its longest-standing shops is set to close down.
The Herald was informed earlier this week that Sport and Rainwear on Hamilton Street had begun advertising a closing down sale.
They are currently offering an additional 20 per cent off of all items in store.
And the shop’s owner has now confirmed the upsetting news.
There are no immediate plans for the shop to cease trading – with the planned official closure set for around July/August of this year.
When the shutters are brought down for the final time, it will bring to an end a truly historic business.
Once owning as many as three stores, they celebrated 125 years in operation only last year – and Saltcoats is the only remaining Sports and Rainwear shop.
It will also see the closure of Saltcoats’ only remaining ‘sports’ store – after Intersport closed around a decade ago.
The reasons for closure, and what the future will hold, are currently unclear.
The Herald has arranged to visit the store next week – and relive 125 years of history.
