State of the Garden 2022

As we kiss spring goodbye and welcome in the new summer season, we want to take a moment to reflect on what has happened recently—and what is in the works—for Fine Gardening. While you might think now is the time when we kick back and enjoy a refreshing cocktail in our own gardens, you’d be sadly mistaken. There is much to be done.

How we build Fine Gardening magazine

In January 2022, the editors brainstormed article topics that they would like to develop or write for the following year (2023). These ideas typically come from the previous year’s experiences in the field, such as gardens we hear about, new research that was published, trending topics, or information frequently requested from our readers.

This means that each issue is in development for over TWO YEARS.

This spring and summer our editors and authors will go out in the field to take photos, record videos, and conduct interviews to begin developing their 2023 articles. They will do this while they are writing and putting final touches on the 2022 articles, developing print art, choosing images, copyediting, and sending it all to the printer so it can be delivered (eventually) to our subscriber’s homes.

As a final step, our digital production team will take those print articles and build them on our website so that All Access members can get the information there as well.

Digital offerings from Fine Gardening

In addition to the print magazine, the editors are also responsible for developing articles and videos for online distribution. We have 12 REGIONAL GARDENING EXPERTS who write content for our website each month.

Many people perform a TON of work to produce the magazine and the website: authors, technical experts, editors, copy editors, photographers, artists, illustrators, art directors, graphic designers, digital production specialists, web producers, researchers, and social media managers.

In 2021 Fine Gardening

Sometimes it’s just nice to say, “Hey, we did that.” So to everyone who makes Fine Gardening what it is: THANK YOU!

And we definitely are not going to forget our members and subscribers: THANK YOU! You make this work possible.

Look forward to more from Fine Gardening

We have more in store for you this year: more rigorously researched articles and tutorials on the science of gardening, more design and how to videos from the experts, and more regional advice and plant picks from the professional designers and horticulturists who garden where you live. Keep an eye on our website and social feeds and stay tuned!
