Dave Grohl’s scheduled appearance on Saturday Kitchen couldn’t go ahead as Storm Eunice put a stop to the Foo Fighters singer’s travel arrangements.

The devastating storm has left thousands of homes without power across the UK, wreaking havoc on flights and train journeys as winds reached a record-breaking speed of 122mph.

While members of the public have been engrossed by the livestream on BigJetTV’s YouTube channel capturing planes landing at Heathrow Airport amid the precarious weather, one journey that couldn’t go ahead was Dave’s.

At the start of BBC Two’s Saturday Kitchen today, host Matt Tebbutt explained why the former Nirvana drummer wasn’t in the studio, with Bastille lead singer Dan Smith taking his place at the last minute.

‘Our special guest was supposed to be the legendary Dave Grohl, unfortunately thanks to Storm Eunice, Dave is stuck in LA,’ he said.

‘Thankfully at the last minute, and I really mean the last minute, the lead singer of the brilliant Brit Award-winning band Bastille has come to save the day and I could not be happier that he is here. I’m relieved.’

While viewers may have been disappointed not to see Dave on the programme, one praised Dan on his lively demeanour on the show.

‘Dan Smith (from Bastille I think) is being brilliant on @SaturdayKitchen never heard the guy chat before but his enthusiasm is infectious. Also pointed out to my youngest Alf that he still suffers from stage fright and he’s a pop star… There’s hope for Alf yet!’ one person tweeted.

Another jokingly asked that as Dan had taken Dave’s place, did that make him ‘The Pretender’ – in reference to Foo Fighters’ hit song from their 207 album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.

On Friday, hundreds of flights were cancelled coming into and departing from the UK as plans struggled to land in the difficult conditions.

Many were diverted or required several attempts before touching down as Storm Eunice continued to batter the country.

Saturday Kitchen airs on Saturdays at 10am on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
