Netflix had us hooked this year
As the world began to open back up in 2021, we were finally able to visit the theatre or watch the latest films at the cinema.
But when a night-in felt most suited, we always had trusty Netflix TV shows to rely on.
Tech Jury reports that Netflix had almost 208 million paying subscribers in quarter one of 2021 (1 January – 31 March), a total of 207.64 million to be exact.
What were the 5 most-watched TV shows in 2021?
While Netflix is yet to release official statistics, The Independent has collated previously announced figures to reveal the most-watched shows of the year so far.
Unsurprisingly, Squid Game takes the crown at number one with a whopping 142 million household views and overtaking 2020’s series Bridgerton in September becoming the streamer’s most-watched title ever.
The Korean drama pulled in a staggering 1.65 billion hours of viewing in just 28 days after the 17 September premiere, according to Netflix.
Next up we have Lupin part one, the French mystery series which racked up 76 million views.

Season five of the trending Spanish drama Money Heist takes the third spot, with a reported 69 million views in total.
At number four, the popular drama series Maid has 67 million views so far.
Sex/Life has 67 million views, ranking at fifth place.
Countdown to top 10
With 60 million views, Sweet Tooth comes in at sixth. The unusual series follows a boy who is half-human, half-deer.
Fate: The Winx Saga has a total of 57 million views in seventh place.
Catching the attention of every teenager (and adult) this year, Sex Education season three gained a huge 55 million views and places eighth on this list.

Shadow and Bone is up next at number nine with 55 million viewers worldwide.
Finally, at number 10, Lupin part two managed to reach 54 million views.
